Analyzing mobile data consumption and experience during the COVID-19 pandemic
Opensignal quantified our smartphone users’ average mobile data consumption and compared it against our users’ average Download Speed Experience across a number of countries since the early months of the year. Our data shows that short-term variations in average mobile data consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic correlated with variations in our users’ average Download Speed Experience across multiple countries
The 5G iPhone: Lessons from existing 5G smartphones
Users on current 5G brands have seen 5G average download speeds between 1.6 and 1.9 times faster than 4G in the U.S. Apple and Google are the last two major U.S. smartphone brands to launch 5G models. The first 5G iPhones will reignite the race to 5G because the iPhone represents about half of the US market.

In this insight, we analyzed the amount of time that smartphone users spent connected to Wifi in the past four months, as well as the change in 4G Download Speeds experienced by our users across more than 40 countries, to understand how mobile network experience compares to pre-lockdown levels.
Quantifying the global 5G experience across ten operators
In Opensignal’s latest 5G analysis we found all ten operators saw much faster speeds for their users on 5G compared with 4G, with speeds between 18.4 times and 1.7 times faster on 5G. Understanding the extent to which 5G improves the mobile experience is critical both for consumers considering upgrading to 5G and also for the mobile industry that’s planning how quickly to invest in 5G.
The State of Mobile Network Experience 2020: One year into the 5G Era
One year on from the first launch of 5G services for smartphone users back in April 2019, Opensignal looks at what’s changed across 100 countries globally on six different measures of the mobile network experience, including upload and download speed, video, voice and games experience, along with the percentage of time that 4G users spent connected to a 4G network (4G Availability).

Globally, operators report mobile data use is increasing dramatically but Opensignal’s analytics demonstrate that despite these challenges the mobile experience is holding up well. Opensignal has seen only relatively small changes in users’ 4G Download Speeds in some countries, and none at all in other countries.
