The mobile experience in the Philippines has improved under Marcos but still lags behind many of its regional peers
It has now been nearly 15 months since Bongbong Marcos was inaugurated as the 20th president of the Philippines. While our Filipino users have seen impressive improvements across many aspects of the mobile experience between the 90 days before Marcos’ inauguration and the 90 days ending 29 August 2023 — this has had little impact on how the Philippines compares to other major markets in South-East Asia.
Global 5G benchmark: South Korea’s retreat on mmWave threatens its 5G leadership
South Korea’s leadership position in 5G experience is at risk as other markets deploy mmWave 5G ahead of South Korea. While South Koreans enjoy the fastest overall 5G download and upload speeds in the world, and spend the second highest time with a 5G connection — called 5G Availability — other markets are enjoying a further greater experience boost from mmWave 5G.
More spectrum leads to faster speeds and better video streaming in Asia Pacific
Opensignal data shows that APAC users observe twice or even thrice as fast 4G download speeds and around 50% faster 5G download speeds when there are large amounts of spectrum bandwidth connected compared with low amounts. Video streaming services also benefit from increased spectrum bandwidth — however, the difference is more marked on 4G than 5G.

Benchmarking the Global 5G Experience — June 2023
The 5G experience continues to evolve. More markets are launching 5G. More spectrum is becoming available and that additional spectrum is boosting capacity and improving users’ experience with faster speeds, and a better video and gaming experience. In this latest global 5G benchmark, Opensignal quantifies how the real-world 5G experience compares.
The arrival of 5G and DITO have changed the Philippines’ competitive landscape
The arrival of new entrant DITO, the introduction of 5G, pressure from the Flipino government to improve connectivity and the COVID-19 pandemic — have caused operators in the Philippines to redouble their efforts and up their investment in their networks. However, such programs take place over a number of years and it can take time for the competitive landscape to shift. With this in mind, in this analysis we look across all the mobile network experience reports we’ve published to show how each operator’s position has changed over time.
