Opensignal has had its emissions reduction targets independently validated and approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and we're now listed as an approved company on their public directory.
This is the result of a process that began in 2024, when we formally committed to setting science-based targets - a pledge that required us to submit a commitment letter to SBTi and then do the substantive work of building a credible, independently verifiable roadmap for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. That work is now complete.
What SBTi approval actually means
SBTi is an independent body that validates corporate emissions reduction targets against current climate science. Reaching approved status isn't a self-certification - it means an external team has reviewed our targets and confirmed they represent a genuine, science-aligned pathway to reducing emissions. Companies that don't complete validation within two years of committing fall off the list. We didn't let that happen.
Our targets cover all three emissions scopes: Scope 1 (natural gas and direct operations), Scope 2 (electricity), and Scope 3 (purchased goods and services, business travel, employee commuting, and our broader supply chain). Scope 3 is the most expansive and the most difficult to get right. It's also where the most meaningful reductions tend to live.
Why Opensignal committed to this
We're a company built on the principle that rigorous, independent measurement produces better outcomes - for our clients, for the industry, and for the decisions that get made on the back of our data. Committing to SBTi is an extension of that same principle, applied to our own operations.
The push to reduce emissions is coming from multiple directions across the industry. We see it in client requirements, in broader market expectations, and in our own sense of responsibility as a business that relies on global telecommunications infrastructure. SBTi gave us a framework to turn that commitment into something verifiable.
What comes next
Our approved status is now reflected on the SBTi public directory, where you can view our validated targets in full. We'll be sharing more about how these goals translate into concrete action across the business as we move through our reduction timeline.
Getting here took real effort. Staying here will take more. We're ready for it.
