South Africa was an early African 5G mover, with launches in 2019 and 2020. Yet in Q1 2026, users spent just 3.7% of their connected time on 5G. Even among South Africans equipped with 5G-capable devices, time spent on 5G was limited to only 11.1% of their connectivity — 4G still anchors the daily mobile experience.

Quantifying the mmWave 5G experience in the US
Opensignal analyzed the U.S. mobile experience on mmWave 5G, a subset of 5G experience which is significantly different to other types of 5G services. We found the fastest average mmWave 5G download speed of 692.9 Mbps using Verizon, which was three times as fast as our tests for AT&T and T-Mobile — 232.7 Mbps and 215.3 Mbps, respectively.
