South Africa’s 5G challenge is spectrum usage, not performance
South Africa was an early African 5G mover, with launches in 2019 and 2020. Yet in Q1 2026, users spent just 3.7% of their connected time on 5G. Austria’s highways and railways see faster overall mobile speeds than the rest of the country
Opensignal analyzed our users’ mobile experience on Austria’s highways and railways and compared that against the average scores seen in the country. We found that our smartphone users generally have a better mobile experience when on motorways and spend more time connected to 5G services and less time with no signal, compared to the country average. Our A1 users experience the fastest download speeds in these areas — meanwhile, those on Magenta’s network see the fastest upload speeds around railways.

Italian operators maintain consistent quality while implementing energy-saving practices
In this analysis, Opensignal examines some of the energy saving practices implemented by national mobile operators in Italy. On all five national operators — Fastweb, Iliad, TIM, Vodafone and WindTre our users see fewer 4G spectrum bands available at night. On 5G networks this practice is predominantly adopted by Iliad. Despite these changes to spectrum bands our users enjoy consistent connection quality during the time these practices are in effect.
Analyzing Taiwan’s pre-merger mobile experience
There have been two mergers of major mobile operators approved in Taiwan, FarEasTone’s acquisition of Asia Pacific Telecom (GT) and Taiwan Mobile’s acquisition of Taiwan Star (T Star).
