South Africa’s 5G challenge is spectrum usage, not performance
South Africa was an early African 5G mover, with launches in 2019 and 2020. Yet in Q1 2026, users spent just 3.7% of their connected time on 5G. Etisalat leads across most mobile experience categories in Qatar based on Opensignal’s awards table as it wins 10 awards outright. On the other hand, du is the outright winner in Games Experience, 5G Download Speed as well as in both measures of a 5G network’s extent — 5G Availability and 5G Reach.
Poland, May 2022, Mobile Network Exprience
Orange collects the largest number of awards — five outright and five joins wins. The operator solely claims three out of four speed awards, along with Games Experience and Core Consistent Quality. Despite not winning anything in the Overall category, Plus secures two 5G Experience awards outright — 5G Video Experience and 5G Download Speed — and shares three additional 5G-related trophies.
Switzerland, May 2022, Mobile Network Experience
Swisscom is the big winner, with nine outright wins and three shared awards, out of 15 trophies available. Salt triumphs in 5G Games Experience and 5G Voice App Experience outright and is the only Swiss operator to earn an Excellent (85 or above) rating for 5G Games Experience.
Lower signal strength impacts the Swiss 5G experience
In our new analysis, Opensignal has observed that our smartphone users in Switzerland experienced worse signal strength when connected to 5G networks than users in neighboring countries — Germany, France and Italy. Also, we found a link between the quality of mobile signal strength and average 5G download speeds: the worse the signal strength, the slower the speeds.
