South Africa was an early African 5G mover, with launches in 2019 and 2020. Yet in Q1 2026, users spent just 3.7% of their connected time on 5G. How the 5G experience compares across 50 states and 250 US cities
Opensignal has analyzed smartphone users’ 5G mobile experience across all 50 U.S. states and as many as 250 cities. We found that 5G varied significantly across U.S. geographies, with our 5G users on the East Coast generally having a better 5G experience, followed by users on the West Coast and in the Great Lakes region.

Opensignal analyzed the impact of different amounts of 5G and 4G spectrum on the overall 5G mobile experience of our users. Our research shows that users in Germany, Italy and the UK saw significantly faster 5G average download speeds when they were also connected to additional amounts of 4G spectrum, through older 4G technology.
